Shield Again is the first Canadian Veterinary Health Product developed with DE111®, a clinically proven probiotic that helps to maintain healthy digestion, immunity, and nutrient absorption in dogs.

As your dog ages, their digestive system may not function as well as it used to. This may lead to a reduced capacity for absorbing nutrients from their food and a weaker gastrointestinal and immune systems.

Shield Again is formulated to support your mature dog’s immunity and digestive systems by providing a perfect combination of probiotics, antioxidants, amino acids and fatty acids.

The Shield Again formula is recommended for dogs seven years and older, dogs with outdoor lifestyles, and working or active dogs.

89 to 30 Days supply per bag.

30 to 60 Days supply per bag.

We created our Shield Again formula by combining a perfect blend of 100% active ingredients (without added fillers, gums, preservatives, sugars or colours) that supports normal digestion, gastrointestinal health and a healthy immune system in mature and senior dogs. These benefits could help you and your aging dog to enjoy again:

▸  Exploring new foods and treats thanks to better digestion.
▸  Visiting other dogs (and that new pup) knowing your older dog has a strong immune system.
▸  A bit of extra energy for walking, playing (or just chilling on the sofa) thanks to better nutrient absorption.

The Shield Again formula is recommended for dogs seven years and older, dogs with outdoor lifestyles, and working or active dogs.

Shield Again is formulated to support a healthy digestive tract and immune system in senior dogs. A healthy gut is a crucial component of your dog’s immune system.

Just remember to talk to your veterinary team if you notice any changes in your dog's behaviour or health.

Omega 3-rich oil from wild-caught marine sources
Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are critical to the immune system and overall gut health of your mature dog. Our Omega 3 fish-based oil is manufactured from wild-caught, mercury- and heavy-metal-free Alaska pollock harvested from the Alaskan Bering Sea and Aleutian Island Fisheries. These fisheries are managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) and certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (COC# MSC-C-52212). By using a certified sustainable source we help reducing pressure on salmon and krill stocks.

DE111® Strain of Probiotics
Our Shield Again formula includes a clinically proven, patented, strain of probiotics called DE111®. This specific strain of probiotics help to maintain and promote the normal functioning of the immune system of your dog while improving the absorption of nutrients.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a well-studied antioxidant with neuro-protective properties in older dogs. Alpha-Lipoic Acid has been called an "Universal Antioxidant" for its ability to remain biologically active in both, fatty and aqueous tissues and its role facilitating regeneration of other antioxidants, including Vitamin C and E.

Every cell in your dog’s body needs energy to function properly. The energy production process takes place in tiny “power stations” inside cells, called mitochondria. Unfortunately, mitochondrial function decreases as your dog ages, reducing the energy available for the cells to fight disease and repair cellular damage. L-Carnitine supports a cell’s energy. It facilitates the use of Omega 3 fatty acids as fuel to sustain energy production in mitochondria.

As dogs age, their immune system weakens, leaving them less able to withstand harmful pathogens. The best way to support your dog's immune system is to incorporate foods that stimulate the immune response. Beta-glucans are active compounds found in the cell walls of baker's yeast, and have been shown to stimulate immune responses in older dogs. Clinical studies prove that adding these active cell wall components to a dog's diet can improve overall immune response.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an essential component of a healthy diet for senior dogs, particularly for brain and cognitive health. Vitamin E is also a powerful antioxidant, that is, it may help to reduce the cellular damage caused by free radicals that could interfere with the normal health and function of joint tissue.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an critical antioxidant for mature dogs that supports their immune system by enhancing white blood cell function and activity.

Pomegranate and Blueberries (An Antioxidant Blend)
The first line of defence against oxidative stress are antioxidants. However, the production of antioxidants decreases significantly as dogs age, signifying the significance of supplementation to support your canine. High-quality and high-potency antioxidants help promote and maintain healthy immune responses. Shield Again includes a robust blend of well-known, safe antioxidants sourced from superfoods like blueberries and pomegranate.

Pumpkin Seed Meal
Pumpkin seeds are nutrient- and energy-dense, containing up to 49% fat and 30% protein. Additionally, they are a natural powerhouse of Omega 6 fatty acids, dietary fiber, antioxidants, Magnesium, Manganese, Iron, Phosphorus and Vitamin B3 (Niacin). If you would like to learn more, here are two articles on feeding a senior dog and the dietary needs of older dogs.

If your dog is new to Shield Again, start with half the recommended dose for the first week. This will allow your dog's system to adjust to the supplement.

Following that, for the next 5 to 7 days, increase to the recommended daily amount.
You can add Shield Again directly to your dog's food for optimal absorption.

You may adjust the dosage depending on your dog's response. Contact us or your veterinary team to learn more about the ideal portion for your dog.

Here Are Some Basic Tips When Caring for a Senior Dog

Your dog is considered mature or senior around the 7-year mark (small breeds might not be considered senior until the 9-year mark).

As a dog ages, its dietary needs change too. Some things to include in your aging dog's diet are:

â–¸ Omega 3 and Omega 6, ideally in a 1:5 ratio (Omega 3: Omega 6) ratio.

Both Omega 3 and Omega 6 support healthy joints, gastrointestinal and immune systems, brain and cognition health, and skin and eyesight.

â–¸ Plenty of Antioxidants.

Antioxidants are the first line of defence against many age-related processes involving oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a detrimental chemical transformation of critical molecules that reduces a cell's ability to detoxify and repair.

â–¸ Glucosamine, MSM and Hyaluronic Acid.

Together with Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, these ingredients maintain healthy joint and cartilage function.

â–¸ Vitamin C, E and Zinc.

Vitamin C, E and Zinc are essential to many biological processes related to a cell's normal health and function.

â–¸ Clinically Proven Probiotics.

Recent veterinary research suggests probiotics play a vital role in maintaining a healthy immune system in senior dogs.

If you'd like to learn more, here is an excellent article from Wikipedia on the principal elements to include in a Senior Dog’s Diet.

Taking care of your mature dog is more than just feeding them an optimal diet. You also want to take into consideration lifestyle adjustments.

This article published on the Today's Veterinary Nurse website shares some helpful information for looking after a senior dog.

A few highlights from the article include:

Movement: Mature and senior pets should not be left to lie stationary in cages or, on the converse, taken on runs for long periods. Physical activity influences many of our body's systems, including blood pressure, gastrointestinal (GI) motility, edema, physical discomfort, body temperature, and muscle strength.

The easiest way to promote movement is to walk your pet. However, if walking isn't an option, provide them with physical therapy instead – this may include a range of motion exercises, massage, and assisted changes in position. Providing either walks or physical therapy around every 4 hours is an excellent place to start.

Comfort: Mature and senior dogs often have lower muscle mass and reduced mobility than younger dogs. They may also have difficulty navigating hard cages or floors. Additionally, senior pets risk developing pressure-associated injuries when left to lie in a rigid cage. Use nonslip mats and thick, comfortable blankets if you need to keep your mature dog in a cage.

As they age, older dogs become more susceptible to certain health conditions. These conditions are often related to the activation of specific genes and the slowing of their cell's capacity to duplicate and repair.

Here is an excerpt from an excellent article published on The Veterinary Nurse website regarding how to take better care of mature and senior dogs. The article is directed towards professional veterinary nurses.

Before diving in, remember that if your dog's physical or mental health has noticeably decreased,
you should talk to your veterinary team before anything else.

Some notes from the article:

"The ageing process is a normal and natural phase of life, however it is also a progressive and an irreversible process occurring throughout the entire body. Ageing is a genetically determined process and when these so-called 'ageing genes' become activated, they begin to slow down some of the processes that are essential for life. For example, special senses such as hearing and sight can become impaired, renal atrophy and decreased glomerular filtration rate can occur, along with a loss of cognitive brain function."

"Looking at the patient as a whole being, the ageing process has an effect on all major body systems, from the skin through to the renal, endocrine and nervous systems. As the body ages, symptoms such as increasing levels of stiffness and loss of elasticity can occur throughout the body's connective tissue. Cellular changes will also occur, for example, within the immune system. This may decrease the immune system's functionality, potentially making it more difficult for the patient to fight off infections, alongside a decreased ability of phagocytosis due to metabolic changes."

All our formulas have been carefully researched consulting a wide range of available literature, including peer-reviewed scientific and veterinarian-approved sources. We only use safe, active ingredients (without added fillers, gums, preservative, sugars or colours) and manufacture all our formulas in a facility certified by an independent third-party to comply with Health Canada regulations and the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Every ingredient in our blends supports each individual formulation as a whole. For example, our all products contain Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids together with Vitamin E and antioxidants, since current scientific literature suggests these ingredients work better when combined.

Our products proudly hold the Veterinary Health Product / Produit de Santé Animale Official Designation by Health Canada, which means that all the ingredients, health claims, and manufacturing processes are compliant with high quality and safety standards.

Our products use advanced and environmentally-conscious ingredients and formulations for joint-related mobility problems, gastrointestinal and immune systems support, and brain and cognitive health and function. Our formulations include:

â–¸ A rich and stable blend of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids with standardized amounts of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, both of which are considered optimal for mature and senior dogs by animal nutrition experts.

â–¸ An Omega 3 fish-based oil manufactured using only wild-caught Alaska pollock from the Alaskan Bering Sea and Aleutian Island Fisheries which reduces the pressure on salmon and krill stocks recently observed across the planet. These fisheries are managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Services and are mercury- and heavy-metal-free, as well as certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.

â–¸ Vitamin C, E and other powerful antioxidants, which help fight Oxidative Stress (a big concern for the general health of mature and senior dogs) while supporting the bioavailability of Omega fatty acids.

â–¸ A combination of premium ingredients not commonly found in other supplements like hyaluronic acid, a clinically proven strain of probiotics, beta-glucan, alpha-lipoic acid, phosphatidylserine, and a variety of plant-based antioxidants. Each of these ingredients supports the overall well-being of your senior pet's mobility, cognitive function, and GI health.
